RL Research Engineer (m/f/x)

About us

The appliedAI Initiative elevates Europe’s industry to become shapers in the age of AI, creating a future that we desire to live in. Through our ecosystem of strong partners, comprehensive programs, services and solutions we advance companies holistically on their AI journey. With our uniquely diverse, interdisciplinary, and driven team, we build on deep technical expertise while specializing on applicability of the solutions. We share a mindset of collaboration and openness with our ecosystem of leading companies and tech players. Our common goal is to strengthen the European landscape, jointly creating unique knowledge for applying trustworthy AI.

Your mission

As a research engineer at the appliedAI Initiative you will contribute to our efforts to enable novel Reinforcement Learning applications at scale, by:

  • building reusable software components
  • collaborating with varied industry partners in developing foundational libraries
  • contributing to open source projects,
  • identifying shared problems across projects to develop supporting software.
Producing high-quality and maintainable code is essential. As a developer, you will make design decisions that impact the quality and reproducibility of work across teams in multiple companies.
Your responsibilities will include identifying and implementing the appropriate abstractions to improve workflows and reduce the time from proof of concept to actual implementation.
You will also watch for new and developing technologies of relevance for ML practitioners, applied researchers and yourself, with an eye towards implementing them within your projects.

Your profile

We are looking for a machine learning or reinforcement learning engineer, or for a experienced programmer with a solid understanding of the essential concepts in ML and RL. You breathe Python and strive for readable, documented and maintainable code. Fundamental statistics, deep networks or parallelization in clusters (to pick a few random things) should all be familiar to you.

We welcome unusual profiles and career paths but we find that people who can take on this role tick most of the following boxes:

  • A solid computer science background or experience.
  • A very strong interest in technology and software development, and high quality standards.
  • Significant industry or open source experience, with an understanding of how complex professional software projects are run, including, but not limited to: version control in a team setting, continuous integration and delivery, thorough testing, etc.
  • Proficiency in Python. Experience with other programming languages would be beneficial, but python is required.
  • Good understanding of essential statistics and machine learning concepts.
  • A willingness to learn new things and a tolerance towards yourself and others for not knowing them.
  • Fluent English.

Advantageous to have:
  • Experience using reinforcement learning to control industrial machinery or robots.
  • A Ph.D. in STEM, preferably Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics or Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience contributing to open source projects.

What we offer

  • Ample budget for attending conferences and buying books.
  • A remote-first setting, but also offices in Munich and Heilbronn, and regular trips to meet each other here.
  • A highly motivated team and dynamic environment, full of people who want to and can make an impact on Europe’s AI landscape.
  • A multilingual and multinational organization gathering researchers, engineers, educational experts and strategists from all possible backgrounds.
  • An atmosphere that encourages to think and experiment in new ways with software, hardware, and processes
  • Hottest topics of the next decade and freedom and trust to initiate own activities
  • A highly visible initiative that helps you build a large and high-level network of start-ups, partners, and tech companies
  • Budget to visit important conferences, read up on papers and develop your skills with the team - potentially showcasing results at e.g. GTC
  • Internal seminar in machine learning and computer science.
  • Egym wellpass (qualitrain) membership, regular team events, public transport subsidy, etc.
